Illa argues that "normality" will not be complete until Puigdemont returns.

The president of the Generalitat (Catalan government), Salvador Illa, has made the concept of "normality" the motto of his mandate. A normality after the turbulent years of the Catalan independence process, which for Illa will not be complete until the leaders of Junts and ERC, Carles Puigdemont and Oriol Junqueras, can exercise their responsibilities in Catalonia and without legal restrictions.

This position, most clearly expressed in his meeting with Carles Puigdemont in Brussels this week, was developed in an interview with 'La Vanguardia', where he stated that he intends to go "to the end on the issue of coexistence . I will do so out of personal conviction and because the responsibility is mine as president of the Catalans, and I will do so because it is my duty to the rest of Spain."

In this sense, Illa's expression "until the end" means not allowing "anyone to put coexistence at risk." "I defend a Catalonia that belongs to everyone and is plural, therefore a Catalonia with Carles Puigdemont, who has my full respect as former president of Catalonia," he added.

In this context, Illa has once again attacked the judiciary, accusing it of overstepping its bounds and once again calling on it to apply the amnesty law. "I understand democracy as a balance, as moderation between different branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. I respect the role of the judiciary, but I also ask that they respect the legislative branch. And anyone tempted to allow the judiciary to invade the legislative sphere, or for the legislative branch to invade other spheres, is mistaken. This must not be allowed. The Congress of Deputies has approved the legally established procedures for the Amnesty Law. A year after its approval, those who had doubts about its effectiveness, if they make an objective analysis of the current political and social situation in Catalonia, must conclude that it has been beneficial. And if they have doubts about its legality, the Constitutional Court has also ruled. Everyone must play their part, without going overboard," he notes in the Barcelona newspaper.
